Perth meat industry mentor lifts top award

A Perth abattoir manager who has devoted years to training a new generation of meat industry professionals has been recognised with a national award.
Ronnie Rattray (58), manager with Anglo Beef Processing (ABP) at Perth’s Inveralmond plant, has lifted the coveted Scottish Craft Butchers Training Mentor of the Year Award 2023, sponsored by the Scotch Butchers Club and the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Ronnie has spent 28 years in the meat industry and, as a former apprentice himself, knows the value of a good mentor to ensure a steady stream of properly qualified butchers for the trade.
And he’s thrilled to be recognised for his years working with aspiring young talent.
“I’m really chuffed to bits to be given this honour,” he said, after receiving the title at a recent awards lunch.
“I’ve done this all my life, but I know how daunting it can be for someone new to the business and it’s nice to know someone has your back and will teach you everything you need to know and catch you when you trip up.
“It’s been a pleasure to help shape the career of so many others and to receive an award for doing that job is just amazing – I’m very honoured.”

Ronnie was nominated for the award by ABP employee Cammy Mill who benefitted from his mentor’s patient and reassuring training.
“Ronnie has mentored me over the last few years,” he said. “From the start he was friendly and always willing to spend time showing me the ropes – he always leads by example.
“Working in an abattoir can be a challenging and daunting experience for anyone,” said Cammy. “This aspect of the meat operation demands a high level of skill, knowledge and awareness of your surroundings but Ronnie has a very calming and reassuring nature which rubs off on everyone.
“Ronnie has a strong belief in the importance of staff development and proper on-the-job training, making sure employees are trained in multiple positions on the line,” said Cammy. “He also promotes career development and recognises potential, and I am very grateful for the opportunities he has given me.”

ABP Food Group manager Ian Baker described Ronnie as “a seasoned professional”, renowned for his mentoring skills and pivotal in the success of numerous employees.
“Ronnie’s unique ability to maintain consistency in performance has set him apart in the industry,” said Ian. “As a dedicated mentor, Ronnie is driven by a passion for seeing people progress and succeed in their roles.”

Gordon King, Executive Manager with Scottish Craft Butchers, said Ronnie’s title was “very well deserved”.
“Being nominated by a trainee shows the high regard that Ronnie is held in by those he has helped throughout his impressive career,” said Gordon.
“A good mentor is key to nurturing the next generation of professionals within the meat industry and Ronnie is one of the best.”
