2017 Craft Butchers Champion White Pudding
Wednesday, 11th Jan 2017A Turriff butcher has been crowned chieftain o’ the puddin race. Haggis makers need not tremble however for John Brown’s title is for Scotland’s other national pudding – the White, or Mealie as it is known as in some quarters.
The Main Street butchers, AE Brown & Son can now rightly take their place among the chieftains after being crowned Scottish champion in only the second ever product evaluation for White Puddings. The contest was judged in Oldmeldrum Aberdeenshire, the heartland of the oatmeal based favourite.
Puddings from all over Scotland gathered at The Redgarth to be judged by food industry experts, members of the Oldmeldrum Community Council and other local foodies. The best four were selected to be mystery shopped and when re-judged at The Redgarth, the Turriff version emerging as the best.
John Brown of AE Brown & Son (pictured above) was delighted to discover that their product had received this honour, he commented:-
“We have been making white puddings to the same recipe since my father started the business in 1957. We have not changed a single thing since it is a popular traditional recipe and a good seller. Customers come in to buy them to take away.
“We use as much Scottish produce as possible in all our recipes and the white pudding is no exception. Using Scottish oatmeal, onions and suet from beef supplied from Inverurie and then filled into natural casings ensures that only the best goes into our puddings.”
On making the presentation, Tracey Gardner (pictured above) of Grampian Oat Products said:-
“Grampian Oat Products are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the Scottish Craft Butchers White Pudding competition. We love a traditional Mealie pudding, and were very impressed with the standard of entries from all over Scotland, and extend our congratulations to all of the winners. Congratulations to John Brown on his well-deserved prize.”
The White Pudding Evaluation attracted 46 entries from white pudding makers throughout Scotland. The organisers Scottish Craft Butchers were delighted with the interest in the event with entries coming from butchers from Jedburgh to Fraserburgh, from Cumbria to Shetland.
