2017 Craft Butchers Handheld Steak Pie Awards

Handheld steak pies produced by Ballard Butchers in Castle Douglas have been voted the best in Scotland!

Owner Jimmy Craig (pictured) said he was “very proud” to be recognised in this meaty New Year honours list. Being judged the best small steak pie in Scotland will turn the public focus on the CD butchers and Jimmy said it was credit to his entire team that they have taken the Diamond Award.

“This gives us a great boost as we go in to 2017,” said Jimmy Craig.

Jimmy’s family are farmers, rearing their own cattle whose meat they sell at the shop and use in all their products along with their own lamb and locally-sourced pork.

“My wife Janet is responsible for all the pies,” he said. “We’re still making them to traditional recipes – but with our own wee twists.

Jimmy wasn’t going to give everything away but he added:-

“I reckon the secret to a winning handheld steak pie is the puff pastry lid and the quality of filling.”
