Elgin Butcher Michael Dawson’s Chilli and Honey Steak Burger has won the top award in the Speciality Burger Category of the 2010 Scottish Craft Butchers Awards.

JC Dawson of Batchen Street came up with the perfect combination against equally hot competition in an evaluation held in Fife last month. The trophy and winners certificate were presented to Michael on Monday 17th May when Scottish Craft Butchers held their North of Scotland Regional meeting at the Laichmoray Hotel, in Elgin.

A team of judges from the meat trade, catering and consumer sectors evaluated more than 70 speciality burgers at the event held at the home of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club. 100 Speciality Sausages and 45 Barbecue products were also examined by the judges.

Bruce McCall from Scottish Federation of Meat Traders presented Mike Dawson with his trophy and Diamond Award on Tuesday 18th May 2010
At the presentation Douglas Scott , Chief Executive of the event’s sponsor said:- “These Craft Butcher Awards once again showcase the high levels of skill and innovation prevalent among the independent butcher’s sector. I am certain that this event leads to consumers being tempted with exciting new products whilst shopping at the local butcher.

“Scottish Craft Butchers are great innovators and react quickly to customers demands for tasty convenient new products. Chilli and Honey seems to be the latest fashion, several attempts were made using this combination in both the speciality burger and speciality sausage categories but Michael Dawson got it just spot on.”

So much so Michael also won Gold for a Chilli and Honey Sausage, and went on to lift gold for both Pork and Marmalade Sausage and for a Steak Burger.
